How to set up electricity & gas in the Netherlands without a BSN

Yes, you can often start arranging a Dutch household energy contract before receiving your BSN. A BSN is not a universal published requirement for energy signup, but suppliers can have different identity, address and payment checks.

Is a BSN always required for an energy contract?

Your payment method and the date you need supply can be more practical constraints than waiting for a BSN. Compare the current signup options before choosing a provider.

Compare energy providers

If a form blocks your application, ask the supplier which information is required for the energy contract and whether an assisted signup route is available. Do not assume that banking or health-insurance rules also apply to energy.

Can you use a foreign bank account?

Sometimes. Two suppliers currently publish explicit foreign-IBAN routes:

Pure Energie: its consumer FAQ says a foreign IBAN is accepted with the bank's BIC. It says you can sign up online or by phone.
DELTA Energie: its payment FAQ says automatic direct debit can use a foreign account and that the full foreign IBAN can be entered during signup. A BIC is required for a foreign account.
Other providers: ask about foreign-IBAN signup or another payment route rather than assuming a Dutch account is mandatory.

What should you have ready?

Your Dutch supply address and move-in or requested start date.
Your contact details and any identity information the supplier requests.
Your IBAN and, for a foreign account where required, the BIC.
Your meter readings or clear meter photos when you receive the keys.

For timing, check the chosen supplier rather than assuming same-day activation. For example, Pure Energie currently recommends signing up around three weeks before receiving the keys and says it does not generally process emergency applications.

What if electricity is already working when you move in?

Working lights do not confirm that an energy contract is in your name. There is no universal grace period to rely on. Record the meter readings when you receive the keys and arrange the contract promptly. If you receive a warning from the network operator or supply has already been disconnected, contact the relevant supplier and network operator directly.

Would you prefer help arranging it?

An intermediary can help coordinate setup. Check which suppliers it offers, any fees or commission arrangements, required documents and the confirmed start date. Do not assume immediate activation or a guaranteed BSN exemption.
