Choosing an internet provider in the Netherlands
The postcode check matters more than the logo. Your address determines which fixed network is available, the maximum speed and sometimes the installation process.
- Installation time: Ziggo says many new connections can be active within 3 working days when you arrange the switch yourself. KPN says a new connection is normally available within 7 working days, or 23 working days when using its switching service. Odido currently quotes about 4 weeks for fixed home internet. Its separate Klik&Klaar 5G product is self-installed and starts when the modem is delivered.
- Fiber, cable, DSL or 5G: Fiber can offer symmetrical upload and download speeds. Ziggo's main network is hybrid fiber-coax and has lower upload than download speeds. KPN and Odido can use fiber or DSL depending on the address. Odido also sells a separate 5G home-internet product.
- Contract flexibility: Ziggo uses a 1- or 2-year minimum term. KPN offers 1-month, 1-year and 2-year options, with a surcharge for the monthly-cancellable home-internet option. Odido offers fixed-line terms plus a monthly-cancellable Klik&Klaar option.
- Mobile + home benefits: Combining services can materially change the effective price. KPN currently offers mobile discounts and double data through Combivoordeel, Odido offers home-internet discount through Klantvoordeel, and Ziggo/Vodafone offers discounts on both services plus double mobile data. Check the current bundle rules before ordering.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I get internet without a Dutch bank account?
It depends on the provider. Ziggo explicitly accepts direct debit from any European IBAN. KPN bills by direct debit, but its current English information does not clearly document the foreign-IBAN signup route, so check with KPN before ordering. Odido's home-internet route is also less clear for foreign IBANs and may require help from support or a shop.
Do I have to install it myself?
The setup depends on the provider and connection type. Ziggo and KPN both offer free installation help in defined situations, while Odido fiber normally involves a technician. Odido Klik&Klaar is designed for self-installation. Check the provider's installation conditions rather than assuming a technician is always included.
Do I need a BSN to order home internet?
We have not verified one BSN rule that applies across these providers, and their public signup requirements are not consistent enough to label every option as BSN-free. For that reason, this comparison does not use the site-wide BSN filter. Check the identity, address and payment requirements for the exact product you want.
