Choosing an internet provider in the Netherlands
The Netherlands has one of the best broadband infrastructures in the world, but navigating the options as an expat can be tricky. When choosing your provider, keep these points in mind:
- Installation time: It can take up to 2-3 weeks for a technician to activate your line. Order your internet as soon as you have your rental contract signed.
- Fiber vs Cable: Both are extremely fast. Fiber (Glasvezel) is newer and offers symmetrical upload speeds, while Cable (Coax) via Ziggo often comes with better TV packages.
- Combos: If you combine your home internet with your mobile phone subscription at the same provider (e.g., Odido Home + Odido Mobile), you often get significant monthly discounts and free extra data.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I get internet without a Dutch bank account?
Most major providers like KPN and Ziggo require a Dutch bank account (iDEAL) and a signed SEPA direct debit mandate to start your contract. It's recommended to open a neo-bank account first if you don't have a traditional Dutch account yet.
Do I have to install it myself?
Providers will usually send you an installation package in the mail. It is essentially plug-and-play. However, nearly all providers offer a free mechanic (monteur) service if you prefer to have a professional install the router for you.
