Who is this guide for?

  • You have registered at the municipality and received your BSN.
  • You need to log in to the Dutch Tax Authority (Belastingdienst).
  • You want to manage your health insurance online.

Why does this matter?

DigiD (Digital Identity) is a secure login system used by all Dutch government agencies and many private organizations (like health insurers and pension funds). Without a DigiD, you would have to handle all official correspondence via paper mail, which is slow and complicated.

Requirements

To apply for a standard DigiD, you must meet the following criteria:

  • You must have a Citizen Service Number (BSN).
  • You must be registered in the Personal Records Database (BRP) with a valid residential address.
  • You must have a mobile phone number (to receive SMS verification codes).

Step-by-step application

  1. Apply Online: Go to the official DigiD website and fill in your BSN, date of birth, and postal code.
  2. Verify Phone/Email: You will receive a verification code via SMS and email during the application.
  3. Wait for the Letter: Within 3 to 5 working days, an activation letter will be sent to the address where you are registered in the BRP.
  4. Activate: Use the code in the letter to activate your DigiD account within 20 days.
  5. Install the App: For the highest level of security, install the DigiD app on your smartphone.

What happens next?

Once your DigiD is active and the app is installed, you can securely log in to 'Mijn Belastingdienst' (Tax Authority), 'Mijn SVB', and your health insurance portal.
