The Expat Phone Problem

Getting a mobile subscription in the Netherlands can be surprisingly difficult for new arrivals. If you walk into a KPN or Odido store and ask for a 2-year contract, you will likely be rejected for two reasons:

  • The BSN Requirement: Major providers run a credit check (BKR registration) for long-term contracts, which requires your Citizen Service Number (BSN).
  • The iDEAL Requirement: Most Dutch companies only accept payments via iDEAL. If you haven't opened your Dutch bank account yet, your foreign Visa or Mastercard won't work.

The Solution: Flexible Budget Providers

Instead of going to the major networks directly, expats should use "budget providers" (MVNOs). These are smaller companies that rent network space from the big players (KPN, Odido, Vodafone) but offer much more flexible terms:

  • Monthly cancelation: You can cancel or change your bundle every month.
  • No credit checks: Because it is a month-to-month service, you don't need a BSN or a credit check.
  • Flexible payments: Some of these providers specifically target internationals and accept PayPal or foreign credit cards.
