The Expat Phone Problem
Getting a mobile subscription in the Netherlands can be surprisingly difficult for new arrivals. If you walk into a KPN or Odido store and ask for a 2-year contract, you will likely be rejected for two reasons:
- The BSN Requirement: Major providers run a credit check (BKR registration) for long-term contracts, which requires your Citizen Service Number (BSN).
- The iDEAL Requirement: Most Dutch companies only accept payments via iDEAL. If you haven't opened your Dutch bank account yet, your foreign Visa or Mastercard won't work.
